Till a few decades ago, theatre was the most popular form of entertainment as actors enacted plays and dramas. However, with the advances in technology, different forms of entertainment like movies, televion, radio and webcasts have become available, reducing the audience for dramas drastically. A lot of effort is needed to organise a play, since unlike cinema and TV, there are no retakes. However, theater retains a niche audience even today, who prefer live performances. Popular TV and movie actors also act in plays for a much lower remuneration than what they normally get, since they receive feedback about their performace from the audience instantaneously.

A playwright or dramatist is a person who writes plays or dramas. The plays may be originally written for theater or they may be adaptations of literary works. Often, it may not be easy to adapt chapters in a book to a scene in a play, so it will have to modified accordingly. The play will include dialogues and actions for the actors as well as the sequence of events in the play.

The most popular plays like those written by Shakespeare have been staged hundreds of years ago. In recent years, screenplay writers play a similar role, those they are not very visible.
