THE MAN IN THE RED JACKET

The Man In The Red Jacket
was observed at the Gallery.

The Man In The Red Jacket
gazed up at a steel orb
suspended from above:
it brought several thoughts to his mind,
thoughts about the nature of round,
and thoughts about iron and heat:
incredible heat and energy.
He thought about a large forge
and the pouring of molten planets
and stars into perfectly round molds.

The Man In The Red Jacket
turned his attention to a mask
displayed on the wall to his right.
He stood and stared at the mask.
He imagined an immense place
and dense coastal forests
and a cave with a fire burning in it.
He imagined paintings on the walls
of the cave; paintings of animals and hunts.
He thought for just a moment that
a magic spell had come over him
and that he was sitting by that fire
in that cave holding the bone of a large animal
that he would carve into such a mask.

He understood, at that moment,
something fundamental
about his reality.

The Man In The Red Jacket
turned, and his eyes fell upon a painting
in an ornate silver frame.
Iridescent colors melted into and through
each other: a white sail dissected the center
of the canvas.
He thought about the color of thought
and the texture of dreams.
He recalled a dream about a body of water
that was this painting, and about the boat
that he sailed across it under many stars
until he imagined that he woke up.

The Man In The Red Jacket
turned to leave.
As he moved slowly towards the door,
he found himself standing between
two large sculptures mounted on gold pedestals.
Two dynamos, he thought, with towering orbs
and purple-tipped electrons of some sort.
He bent in closer
to read the description of this work.
He read:
“DYNAMO DREAM MAGNETOS”
“ - YOU are HERE - “

The Man In The Red Jacket
felt something happening;
something quite extraordinary.
Time began to evaporate,
dissolving all around him.
He observed that dissolving time
is much like the color of twilight,
and he understood something fundamental
about this dream
and about his place in it.

The Man In The Red Jacket
is observed at the Gallery.

The Man In The Red Jacket
with the shiny white shoes
stands very still
and listens….
